A living paradise

Earth is OurEden

Not a paradise lost,
but a paradise entrusted to us.

Across religions and spiritual traditions, one message echoes clearly: we are called to cultivate the Earth, protect its bounty, and help all life flourish.

A Paradise Entrusted,

Not Forsaken

The Earth is not a paradise lost to us. It is the living garden we have been given in trust. From the dawn of spiritual awareness, humanity has received the same profound invitation: to tend this world with care, to protect its delicate balance, and to ensure that life — in all its forms — continues to flourish.

This is no mere suggestion. It is our sacred duty, woven through the teachings of every major faith and spiritual tradition — Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Taoism, Jainism, the Bahá'í Faith, Shinto, and Indigenous Traditions.

Scripture itself opens with the declaration that God created the heavens and the earth and saw that it was good. Humanity, formed in the divine image, receives the vocation to exercise dominion — not as license for exploitation, but as a mandate for wise and faithful stewardship.

Throughout the biblical narrative, this responsibility is reaffirmed. The Earth remains the Lord's, and those who dwell in it are called to act as faithful tenants and guardians. Creation is not an inert resource but a living testimony to the Creator's wisdom and generosity. To neglect or abuse it is to fail in the trust that has been placed in human hands.

We must develop knowledge and build technologies that elevate humanity, but we must do so while deeply respecting Gaia, our living planet.

🌱

Cultivate

To nurture growth in all its forms — the soil beneath our feet, the minds of our children, the spirit of our communities.

🛡️

Protect

To preserve the delicate balance of life — defending what is pure against what would corrupt or destroy.

🌼

Let Life Flourish

To honor the divine gift we have received, ensuring every form of life can reach its fullest potential.

“We are not owners of this Earth. We are its caretakers.”

The biblical witness consistently affirms that while humanity is granted authority over the Earth, this authority is always exercised in accountability to the Creator who declares the Earth to be His own.

This is our shared inheritance. This is our sacred responsibility.

Uniting Humanity

To fulfill our purpose, we must unite every culture, nation, and community around a shared, unwavering mission.

🌍

Protect & Preserve

To unite humanity around a single mission: to protect the Earth, to protect human beings, and to safeguard our children's futures.

⚖️

Dignity & Safety

To eliminate destructive elements, to respect our shared laws, and to defend the rights that ensure safety, peace, and dignity for all.

🕊️

Honor Our Heroes

To honor those who lead the way — the teachers, healers, builders, and innovators who inspire us to reach our highest potential.

Across faiths and cultures

One Eternal Message: Stewardship

From the beginning of recorded wisdom, every major tradition has explicitly entrusted humanity with the care, love, and protection of the natural world.

What Each Tradition Teaches

✝️Christianity & Judaism

The Old and New Testaments establish humanity as stewards entrusted with creation. Dominion is exercised as responsible guardianship under God's sovereignty. Christian integral ecology teaches that the environmental crisis is inseparable from social injustice — we must hear both the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor.

☪️Islam

Humanity is khalifah — God's trustee on Earth. The Qur'an and Hadith repeatedly emphasize that the natural world is a sacred trust (amanah), and corruption of the Earth is among the gravest sins. Stewardship is an act of worship.

🕉️Hinduism

The Earth is revered as the Divine Mother. The Vedas teach that all creatures carry the divine spark, and the cosmos itself is the body of Brahman. Reverence for all life — ahimsa and dharma — forms the foundation of environmental ethics.

☸️Buddhism

Through dependent origination, all beings are interconnected. Compassion (karuna) and loving-kindness (metta) extend to every form of life. Harm to the Earth is harm to ourselves — the path to enlightenment includes nurturing the web of existence.

🪯Sikhism

The Guru Granth Sahib teaches that God's creation is sacred and interconnected. Air, water, and earth are not commodities but divine gifts. Seva (selfless service) extends to caring for the natural world as an expression of devotion.

☯️Taoism

The Tao Te Ching teaches harmony with the natural order. Humanity must follow the Earth, which follows the Dao. Environmental destruction results from opposing nature rather than flowing with it. Simplicity and reverence restore balance.

Jainism

Ahimsa — absolute non-violence — is the supreme ethical principle. Every element of nature possesses a soul (jiva). Jain ecology extends protection to earth, water, fire, air, and all vegetation, recognizing our existence is entwined with theirs.

🌟Bahá'í Faith

The Earth is one country and mankind its citizens. Bahá'u'lláh teaches that nature is God's Will made manifest. Inner spiritual transformation and outer environmental care are inseparable — knowledge exists to serve universal peace and the flourishing of life.

⛩️Shinto

Kami (divine spirits) dwell in every element of nature — in trees, rivers, mountains, and even a single blade of grass. Shinto teaches profound reverence for the natural world, seeing all things as connected and mutually dependent.

🌿Indigenous Wisdom

The Earth is our Mother. We are not separate from her — every action ripples through the great web of life. Indigenous traditions worldwide teach us to walk gently, think seven generations ahead, and honor the sacred balance that sustains all living beings.

The Universal Call

“The Earth is the Lord's and everything in it.”

— Psalm 24:1

Across all traditions, these hopeful messages unite us: protect, cultivate, give thanks, and let life flourish in beauty and peace.

Diverse people from all cultures standing together in unity on a lush green Earth bathed in golden light

The Unifying Vision

Humanism

One Family. One Earth. One Purpose.

Every tradition on this page points toward the same horizon: a world where compassion, justice, and reverence for life are not ideals but daily practice. Humanism is not a replacement for any faith — it is the common ground where all faiths already stand.

It is the recognition that what unites us is infinitely greater than what divides us. When the Christian speaks of love, the Muslim of mercy, the Buddhist of compassion, the Hindu of dharma, the Indigenous elder of kinship with the Earth — they are speaking the same language in different tongues. Humanism is that language made universal.

🤝

Universal Compassion

Every tradition teaches love for the neighbor, the stranger, the unseen. Humanism distills this into an unconditional ethic: the dignity of every person is sacred, regardless of creed, nation, or origin.

🔬

Reason & Wonder

Science and spirituality are not enemies — they are two eyes through which we behold the same magnificent universe. Humanism honors both the laboratory and the temple as places of revelation.

🌍

Planetary Stewardship

What every scripture calls sacred duty, Humanism calls collective responsibility. The Earth is not an inheritance from our ancestors but a loan from our children — we must return it whole.

⚖️

Justice as Love in Action

Where religion speaks of divine justice, Humanism speaks of human justice. The two converge: no peace without equity, no flourishing without fairness, no Eden without shared dignity.

🕊️

Radical Unity

Beneath every prayer, every meditation, every sacred chant lies one truth: we are one family on one Earth. Humanism is the name we give to the moment we finally act on what we have always known.

The Sacred in the Human

Every tradition sees the divine spark in humanity. Humanism honors that spark — not by choosing one name for God, but by recognizing the godlike capacity for goodness, creativity, and love in every human being.

“We need not worship the same God to walk the same path. We need only love the same Earth and honor the same humanity.”

— The Humanist Manifesto of Eden

Humanism does not ask you to abandon your tradition. It asks you to bring the best of your tradition to the table where all of humanity is invited to sit.
